Just got back from a wonderful long weekend in the City of Roses. Having visited this town many times as a child, I have to say what's changed the most is how cool it is. And I'm not talking just about the weather. The restaurants, the sights, the shopping, the vibe is just COOL. Portland hipsters have "casual nonchalance" down to a science, yet there is still an air of sophistication you get in bigger cities like LA and New York. There is no lack of five star restaurants, with the Pinot Noirs from the Willamette Valley, the local seafood, and fresh Oregon berries being the biggest stars. And while I wouldn't call this town cheap, those of us from LA and New York will be happy with how far your money can go in this town. No sales tax means you can shop until you drop. And you won't soon forget that the local coffee and chocolate is addicting. If you're looking for a city break that has it all, Portland is a great bet. It even had this die hard Californian looking up at the beautiful mansions in the Northwest Hills and thinking "I could get used to this!"
Just returned from a week in Maui, what a great break! Weather was cooler and wetter than expected but this added to the calm vibes of our trip. You know you really love a place when you enjoy being there even in heavy rain. While in Maui I always eat copious amounts of my favorite ice cream Roselani Tropics. The Kona Mud Pie is the best with Pineapple Coconut in close second. Check them out at locations around the island and at www.roselani.com
